Masterchef BBQ Cook-Off for Team Building

How to turn up the heat on corporate team building with a Masterchef BBQ

If you’re in the corporate world, chances are you’ve been to your fair share of corporate team building events. So how do you make yours stand out from the rest while making sure it actually does the job it is supposed to do: build the team.

Hosting a BBQ cook-off not only lets co-workers get to know each other in a high energy, low stress environment, but everyone gets to the reap the rewards: a bounty of good nosh.

Here’s everything you need to know about the BBQ Masterchef cook-off:

What is the BBQ Masterchef cook-off?

The concept is incredibly simple – that’s why this team building activity works so well. Equal teams are created, with a Head Chef appointed within each team to lead the group. Teams are armed with chef hats, aprons, cooking utensils, and raw ingredients. And of course, it isn’t a challenge unless there is a secret ingredient! Your teams now have everything they need to plan, prepare and whip up their ultimate BBQ extravaganza against the clock.

Oooh that sounds good. What happens next?

That sounds a little too easy doesn’t it? Well, we spice things up with some creative challenges throughout the event. This really tests the teams and reinforces the whole goal of teamwork, open communication and collaboration.

Who decides on the winners?

You’re right; it wouldn’t be a competition without a panel of judges. Our very own Executive Chef (think Matt Preston without the cravat) is on hand to award scores for taste, style, teamwork, presentation, and originality. Then everyone – not just the victors – can sit and feast on their fruits of their labour.

So what skills will they learn?

As well as challenging their culinary skills, workers will pull together as a team – which is really what this is all about. Specifically, the activity relies on open communication, decision-making and interaction: all those essential skills for any successful team. They will also develop a greater understanding of working under pressure. And you know the saying, “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!”

Any other reasons we should host a BBQ Cook-Off?

Plenty! A corporate BBQ cook-off will also:

  • Boost morale
  • Motivate people
  • Act as an icebreaker to help colleagues get to know each other better
  • Help team members learn about strengths and weaknesses

We only have a small team – will it still work?

The great thing about this team building activity is that it can be used by any business, large or small. We’ve run the activity with teams as small as 10 to as big as 300.

Where’s the best place to hold a BBQ cook-off?
